You can find art in New York City in many place, in fact the city is bursting with it! From lesser known sidewalk artists, to up and coming listed artists to some of the greatest artists in history - it can all be seen in New York City.
If you are looking for art to buy for yourself, New York can be a great place to visit. Of course, some of the most desirable modern artists are represented in many of the New York galleries but you can also find some “up and comers” if you want to make a smart investment. If your budget doesn’t run to gallery works, then you might consider buying something from one of the many artists selling their paintings on the sidewalk in Soho.
If you’re not in the mood for buying you can still take a peek at some of the worlds most famous art in New York City. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can find works by some of the most renowned European painters dating back to the 1300’s as well as some of the most famous American painters.
At the MET, you can also view a special exhibition of American Folk Art where you can see works of artists from the 18th and 19th century to include Rufus Hathaway, Joshua Johnson, Edward Hicks, and Ammi Phillips. A special exhibit of the works of John Singer Sargent, paintings of Queen Victoria by Thomas Sully and a collection of American Impressionist prints, drawings and watercolors to name but a few of the great exhibits in this massive museum.
At the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), you can see some of the best in modern art including exhibits of architecture and design, drawings, film, paintings, sculpture and photography. They have a diverse collection of 150,000 pieces and a library containing 300,000 books.
There are many other museums to see art in New York City and depending on what type of art you prefer, there are other galleries and even outdoor artists you might want to see. Some museums you might want to look at include: Brooklyn Museum - the second largest museum, this has 1.5 million pieces covering every era of art history and the Whitney Museum of American Art - for eclectic contemporary art.
